Perennial ArtSpace fave Amrik Varkalis returns once again with her enchanting landscapes, some reminiscent of the tropicana of her roots, some darkling and brooding with the atmoshere of her present home in West Yorkshire, all shot through with mauve, peach and opulent Prussian Blue as if lit from within. She rocks our world - make sure she rocks yours too, and pop in during her exhibition: July 11th to July 29th 2008. If you want an invite to the Private View, please pop in for details. Rock!
Amrik says: "Essentially, people like my use of colour and composition and the scale of my paintings means that they can be hung anywhere. I love to see people getting pleasure from engaging with my paintings and The ArtSpace is a great venue for this to happen. Artistically I am a traditionalist, I love the post-war British painters like Keith Vaughn and Ivan Hutchins and the abstract artist, Terry Frost."
Closer to home, Amrik has her own views on Bradford's most famous son: "David Hockney is a wonderful artist and I often visit his work at Salt's Mill but the palette of his Yorkshire landscapes disappoints me. He should look at my palette: Yorkshire landscapes are deep and rich and they need deep, rich colours to paint them. Perhaps he's developing a sunny Californian palette, but it's not right for the rich, wet stone of Yorkshire. I'd be happy to show him, anytime!" She smiles, tongue in cheek.
Amrik is a lecturer at Bradford College where she teaches aspiring art teachers: "I have been teaching art for thirty years - I was on the original working party that developed the National Curriculum for secondary art in 1992 - but it still thrills me to see the wonderfully uninhibited paintings of young children."
But Amrik adds that her artistic work is still central to her life: "Painting and exhibiting is taking up more and more of my time nowadays. I recently exhibited very successfully in London and galleries there are selling my paintings. It's nice to think of my little bits of Yorkshire hanging on London walls!"
